Here's a thought, is the issue between cyclists and drivers symptomatic of an increasing lack of courtesy to others in general in society? (No, I'm not channelling Ptiddy )
Examples (not generalisations, I'm not saying everyone behaves like this)
1. Cyclists riding in groups, 2 or more abreast, on single lane carriageways well under the posted speed limit.
They know they're under the limit, they know they're holding up cars and frustrating the drivers who can't get past them, but they adopt the "We're entitled to be here" mentality and refuse to budge when it would be easy to move to indian file and hug the left so cars can past
2. Dumb women in supermarkets. (Aldi in particular) get served, pay, then stand there frigging with the trolley and groceries which stops the next person from moving on. A few weeks back I was the victim of this. I was next in line, the cashier says to me "bring your trolley around here "(pointing to the spot where the last person was still frigging with their trolley), so I said loudly, "I will as soon as these dickheads wake up and move out of the road". Dirty looks and mumbles resulted but they weren't just holding me up but the 6 people behind me
3. Dumb women in shopping centres who feel the need to dawdle along pushing their prams/shopping trolley's/mix of the two, side by side yapping a mile a minute blocking everyone behind them from getting past.
4. Drivers who think it's their right to zoom up the left lane when it is about to end and expect it's their right to be let in infront of you. And if you do let them in, not a wave or acknowledgement that you did.
FFS, I grew up in the bush. If a bloke took his tractor or farm truck out on a back road and a car came up behind him, he'd move to the left to let people past.
A couple of weeks ago, coming home down a single carriageway, a bloke on a cycle was struggling up hill toward a roundabout. I was watching him and slowed down in case I took him out. As he got near, he looked over his shoulder, saw me and pulled right out of the road instead of pushing into the roundabout. I accelerated, passed him and gave him a wave of thanks for his courtesy.
To me, that's the root cause of all this stuff. Common courtesy is dying out, too many people are self absorbed tosspots who only think of themselves. they're much too concerned with their own "rights" and "entitlements" than having any context of how their behaviour impacts on others.

Yep, it's everywhere
I was in the supermarket today, in the queue for the self serve lane, I was third in, a woman, her partner and kid come up, stand behind the lh aisle of tellers, I said excuse me the queue is here, she said no there is two lanes, I said and one queue for the machines, the person moved from the machine she jumped in. I said, that's cool you obviously have more important things to do the those of us waiting patiently, with our hands full and jobs to get back too, you must think your more important than us full stop. She gave me an insolent grin, partner took off embarrassed, her smirk was too much for my new good wishes attitude, so I said " fricken trailer trash" ( she looked like the classic stereotype!) everyone in the queue was pissing themselves at the look on the bitches face!!
If someone stops for me at a crossing, I wave, even though they have to stop. Shits me when people don't. So I get the shits a lot. Thanks takes only a moment and cost nothing.
Everyone is in too much of a hurry.....sad, really sad

Victorian road law states that once a vehicle is in front of another it has right of way and you must yield.stui magpie wrote:

So why "acknowledge" you obeying the law?

because I could have easily kept in front of them so they were forced to brake or run off the road, but I chose to let them in.Black_White wrote:Victorian road law states that once a vehicle is in front of another it has right of way and you must yield.stui magpie wrote:

I took my bike out for a little spin yesterday
I was attacked by farmers dogs, swooped at by magpies, abused by bogans. I stacked by bike twice and tore a chunk out of my left leg
Ok ... a small chunk .. but a chunk nonetheless!
I was caught out in the rain and then burnt by the sun
And battled congested bike paths when I could barely keep myself upright. Figures
(as an aside, they should put a speed limit on the Gardiner's Creek trail. Lots of dangerous men with large egos and small penises ride that trail)
Oh, I nearly ran over a snake too. Or, I nearly got bit by a snake. Not sure how that would have panned out.
There's nothing quite like setting yourself an impossible challenge, and then achieving it
Eighty five kilometers .. my knees are bung this morning, haha

Riding to work on 4 of the 5 days I rode (drove one day) I had a series of close calls every day.
The most noteworthy was a scumbag truck driver twice deliberately going centimetres from me. I went past the traffic at lights on the bike lane. Nothing flashy just riding, head down.
Second notwworthy incident was a large overweight man getting out of his 4 wheel drive parked on St Kilda road, just flung open the door to it's widest opening without looking. Fortunately I was riding on the right side of the bike lane next to the edge of the white line (inside the lane), he scard me & I instictively yelled out - not sure what it was. I was doing about 25km/hr. I scared him too as he jumped a mile. It was unintentional on both our parts. At the red light I could turn around & yell within his earshot "Use your left hand, use your left hand to open the door then you'll always see a bike" .
Third incident was riding south to the city (as were all the other incidents) & going through St Kilda Junction when cars meant to be going straight cut across the bike lane (the white line of the bike lane has those raised white bars so when you touch them with the car tyre you start to feel it & hear it usually as the driver & indicates you should not be doing this. Anyhoo this driver not only cuts across (happens all the time) but has no room to cut into the lane heading off to Queen s road so he hits the brakes again not very far from me - again f*cken hairy, the driver next to me was astonished & just shook her head in disblief at the drivers behaviour.
Yes drivers can point to some riders being obnoxious going through red lights etc which I see my self but cars can kill, bikes invariably don't.
Car drivers please take care - look out for cyclists especially when opening car doors.
Rememeber that's one less car on the road, less pollution, & less wear & tar on our roads.
There's been a flood of cyclists in the Emergency department this week. One I noted fell asleep on his bike & hit a stationary car. I don't know the details but I can imagine

Each regular road cyclist should invest in a bike camera , gopro , contour etc , for their own safety and as an eyewitness to events when they are on the road.
Plenty of in car cameras are available to car drivers also , it would help them with a lot of their disputed insurance claims and gps enabled in car cameras for speed fine claims
The age did a story on bike cams a couple of days ago

I have sex every day. Sometimes twice a day! If I'm lucky.
And no, I'm not alone on these occasions.
Hint for those looking to marry. Get yourself a European, and don't have kids. Kids kill the sex drive of woman.
I'm a happy, happy man, with full pink balls!

One more post...
Last night I had the pleasure of walking up and down the yarra on "shared footpaths".
In all that walking, only one cyclist called out to "keep left" as a warning of his approach from behind. He even said "thank you" as he passed.
About 100 cyclists came bearing down at a huge rate of knots without any warning, and cyclists are in the main silent in their approach.
We could have easily been injured by these idiots. And had no way of seeking justice if they had.
Time to make these ignorant folk responsible for their actions.
