This year the draft is seen as being pretty even between picks 15 to 30 and if I'm not mistaken none of those players taken at pick 25 where taken by Hine.

He came a cropper back in 05 with Stanley and Cook but I think like a fine wine dekka is getting better with age and I'll back he'd be able to find us a bit of hidden gold with a pick in the 20's.

Ironically enough Beams is a testament to that.

pick 25
s armstrong
callum urch
harry miller
adam hartlett
wayde mills
natahn djeukerra
tom collier
jack redden
aaron black
karnezis
spencer white
sebastian ross

strike rate down to 1 in 12

tell me, are these good odds for an established AA midfielder?
3 Club captains at pick 5
Buddy ranked top 5 players by many
Cunnington a B&F winner this year

Recent picks were compromised as the best players like Jaegar O'Meara, Brad Crouch, Jack Martin and all the pre-selection picks like Treloar, Shiel, Cameron etc were not through the draft.
Buntine for e.g. was not the 5th best player of that draft year for example.

I'd say the track record on pick 5 is pretty good, particularly with a recruiter as good at picking talent as Derek Hine.

Pick 25 will pick us up Levi Greenwood - probably gives us the mature player we seek.
One team, one dream - the Pies and this year's premiership

Sorry but looking at the history of a set position in the draft is ridiculous. Getting a player to Beams' quality is a bloody complicated recipe. Sure they may be picked high but you've then got to throw them into a professional environment (I heard from an insider that the U18's these days are no better prepared for the physical demands of the game than ever before), throw in possible injuries, suspensions, lack of opportunity (or opportunity).

I saw a few people mentioning Aish was a gun. How many Brownlow votes did he get? 0, zip, nada. How long will it take before he's dominating if he's as good as people say he is? Another 2-3 years - minimum.

I read somewhere tonight that our board is now involved so it's not just a football department decision. Apparently we will not, under any circumstances, be backing down. I can't find the article at the moment but positive that was the gist of it.

Let's assume the deal breaks down... is that going to be the most uncomfortable 12 months of Beams' career? If he refuses to play it'll be breach of contract.

I'm hoping that the fact that he is contracted and that this is a professional sport will mean that if worst comes to worst and a deal isn't done that he is man enough to deal with it. Mind you.... he could've turned up to the B&F too so maybe I won't hold my hopes too high.

Lewis Taylor won the rising star and not Aish.

Brisbane should be thanking there lucky stars we're all stocked up for midgets and want Aish.

He's 182cm, same as Aish. Lewis Taylor is 173cm.

Don't mind short players as long as they're talented.

How many Brownlow votes did Daisy, Pendles and Swan get in their FIRST season of senior footy??

Is the brownlow now the gauge for being a great footballer?

A very long bow indeed...............

This time last year when the Lions were being reamed from all directions for their deserting youngsters, we resisted the opportunity to take advantage of their bent over position and gave them a fair trade, Paine who had kicked 45 VFL goals for Karnezis who had played good games in the NEAFL.

Port only gave them pick 22 for Polec, who was a pick 5 with some senior experience after Brisbane agreed to downgrade two other draft picks i.e. they ripped them off but good.

Brisbane should be remembering that right now
Paine would have been delisted, that's a joke. Port screwed them. Now they are offering picks one and two and you think they are screwing us? Let's look at reality, beams is dead to Collingwood. He won't stay. We should try to extract as much as possible but they last straw will be picks 5 and 25, and I bet my left nut we take it if we have to.
Beams is not quite judd, but not far off. iirc, Wc got a 10 year CHF who had just been drafted with pick 4 (kennedy), plus the comp package that Brisbane is offering.

I think its 5 and Aish to tell you the truth. especially since Aish wants out. Pair him with our existing Adelaide boys and rename us the East Adelaide Magpies! Aish, Sharenberg, Broomhead and Grundy would be a great midfield in 2016

also note that Cleveland gave up the last 2 number one picks (one of them touted to be the next LeBron James) so that they could get Kevin Love.

I think the issue here is that Brisbane have said "how good is this? we get one of the best midfielders in the land AND we keep all of our promising talent."

Fairly unrealistic. If Brisbane screw this up, I think they'll regret it. Aish may end up being Beams, but he may not. Its the unknown that makes him nowhere near as valuable as Dayne Beams and worth it for Brisbane to pull the trigger.

GWS are being smart. They are giving up amazing "potential" to continue to build out their list over the next few years. To put a Beams around the other guys Brisbane has could be huge for them. they need to get over it and give up Aish and 5!
