Oh and Tony Shaw wasn't such a great kick, but he was an incredibly inspirational leader. (Yeah, I know, that was some time ago!! ) However, a player's true value can sometimes be overlooked. Who else would you have played instead of Adams today?
Shaw was not a long kick but he rarely missed, and his 30m handballs onto a spot were legendary. No comparison there. It's strange for someone at this level to be so inept at something so fundamental.
But it's not all the time Mugwump. Some games he's okay.
I ask again - who else would you put in in front of him?
Some games he is better, but it's proportional to pressure. it's a massive systemic problem for us right now. Change Varcoe for Adams today and we'd have won. Frankly, change Blair for Adams and I think we'd have won.
Quite honestly, unless this aspect of his game improves I'd put any competent footballer in front of him. Getting it does not help if you lose it in terrible places repeatedly.
Magpietothemax wrote:Taylor Adams is very contradictory, in the sense that he can sometimes have brilliant games, and on other occasions his errors in delivery can provoke despair. What is constant about him however is his absolute effort and commitment, and his desperate energy to seek out the ball. As another poster commented he should be mentored more during a game. If he is having a "bad disposal day", get him to handball on instead, or some other specific role. His incredible, gut wrenching effort can still and should be channeled in a constructive direction. Great leaders are not always those who achieve the most excellent standard, but they are those who encourage others, by sharing their disappointments and by demonstrating their refusal to give in. (See Nick Maxwell).
I recall I posted my concerns about kicking to a target standing still - if you look at most of our clangers, Adams especially, many were kicks to someone standing still. The players standing still also have some blame in this. Look at how good we move the ball when we kick to running targets.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree Mugwump, but good discussion!

Still giving up too many easy goals whilst having to work hard for ours.
We have been at our best when sticking close to our opponents particularly on the switch. Crocker got caught ball watching a few times today allowing their outlet player to mark and play on too easily off half back.
Would also like to know why people clap the players off the ground at half time?....I don't get it considering there is still a half to play.
Broomhead Is becoming a dangerous line breaker and I'm glad we are attacking the corridor more often.
Shattered about this loss considering we were 5 goals up at one stage.
The killer instinct should be driven by the leadership group.
Tay Adams should not be a part of the leadership group.
A big improvement from the Carlton game but still a way to go.
Why exacty should Taylor Adams not be in the leadership group?
How can leaders drive excellence if they don't posses it themselves?
Dunno, ask Nick Maxwell, he'll tell you.
(Just fyi, I think both Maxwell and Adams possess excellence in certain areas, but just to make a point...)

We kicked st8 today, we dominated the ruck and we still lost to Melbourne without their 2 best players, we are shit and Buckley must go.
This is damn delirious. I definitely am not won to Nathan Buckley as a coach. But honestly, how many of our best did we have out for this game?Of all the losses we have had, this one would be the least likelly to prove that "Buckley must go".
Their outs were bigger than ours, time for you to face facts, we're shit.
No,i can't agree with that.We had at least five of our best 22 out today, and they had what two or three out? This was clearly our weakest and slowest team all year.

Good point ROB - one that I for one had not considered.

I'm sure we said the same thing after the Carlton game, and perhaps Anzac day too. But guess what happened.
He is a game losing inept shit footballer, like Blair.
Both coach killers in the making, intent on claiming their first scalp.
TV went off during the last quarter before it got smashed.
We had this rabble DUSTED & BROKEN in the 2nd qtr until this talentless HACK decided he was a better kick the the Captain, and slaughtered it across half back. And all they needed was a little belief to start eroding our lead.
Oh, and about two dozen frees form those coonts with whistles helped.
As we knew, that charity free at qtr time resulting in a goal made all the difference in the end. I really hope this is the last QB match we have to suffer against these charity case shit kickers.
Good news is, we get another chance to lose against them [& Gawn] in the final round with nothing to play for now, while they charge to the eight.
He didn't have a great game today. He had a worse game against Freemantle when a few people here awarded him votes. The game before that against Hawthorn he won us the game. All of which means he has his ups and downs like any other player in the AFL and doesn't deserve some of the flak he gets here.

We gave it a good crack but ultimately a mixture of umpiring, individual mistakes, tiredness and some quality missing from the 22 cost us the win.

In one pithy sentence, that is the game we just saw. Well summed up Swoop.

The leadership group is something none of us from outside know anything about. Nick Maxwell captained a premiership. Would you have had him in the leadership group based on his performance? The answer is NO. So don't go making rash statements.

Agreed. Adams just seems to be involved in so many key moments that cost us momentum swinging goals it is incredible. Either through defensive turnovers like we saw today or ball butchering entries I50 that results in a lost opportunity and clean opposition rebounds. I just do not know what we can do with him. I've said this before about him, he is holding a prime position in our midfield, get stacks of the ball and we simply cannot rely on him to execute. This is unacceptable if we are to develop into a serious football team. He is a problem. Many will simply argue how much he tries and tackles and all the effort etc but in the modern game if you are a prime midfielder you have to be able to execute clean skill for your team. I shudder when he is about to kick it.
Totally; I feel sick in the guts every time he gets his hands on it [like Blair], because it is obvious he is not capable of hitting a target by foot.
And the result in inevitably a turnover, as you watch every opposition player charge towards their goal as our backline valiantly tries to fix his shit.
Do we even really need him in the side? What could we get in trade? Any chance of working him in a deal back to the GWS for one of their good players like Kelly or Shiel, hell I'd take even Coniglio. GWS really gave us the shaft with Adams and WHE, a ball butcherer and a soft ****.
Sorry to interrupt this cost exchange - but both you guys have got NFI.
You're like the flogs bagging Maxy as a poor Captain because he lacked the skill of others.
Adams HAS improved his kicking since recruited, but more importantly bleeds for his team and team mates. That's the intangible that you both don't get, he's a leader and offers more to the collective success of the team, the occasional bad kick does not matter.

+1, Elliott and Reid alone nullify the Gawn/Hogan injuries IMO. Even playing field based on that alone.
Throw Wells and Goldsack in... and I think we're clearly in the red.
A bit of a pipe dream at this stage, but I would have thought that a fit Sinclair would have been handy to nullify their transitions from the rebound today.

One of the first rules I imposed on the junior teams I used to coach - never kick to someone standing still!!
