Both are a examples of where we had the picks available and chose to do something different. History would say they were bad decisions and what could have been.

2013 was the Shaz and Freeman no show when we could have taken Zach Merrett grand nephew of Thorold. Shaz, Freeman, Dom Sheed, Jesse White, Allir Allir and 2 West Coast nobodies all involved.

In 2017 we followed the Jaiden Stephenson spark and what a $hit show that turned out to be at senior level. Could have taken Ed Richards grandson of Ron and grand nephew of Lou and Brandon Starcevich nephew of Craig. We could have split the 6 and taken Richards and one of Zac Bailey, Oscar Allen, Brandon Starcevich or Zac Taylor. What could have been.

Will be very disappointed with Hine and co for a very long time if they don't give Tom McGuane a chance and he rips it up at another AFL club for years to come
Hope you feel better now.

Getting McGuane will depend on how much it will cost the club and if they view him as fitting into the team and game style we currrently have.

With clubs like St Kilda currently on a crusade against father/son picks and club academies (becasue they have been useless in both areas and need excuses for their mediocrity), the AFL could change the rules at any time.

^True but I doubt they will get much support from the other clubs who have F/S on the horizon
St Kildas argument that they are shit at recruiting so everyone else must be penalised will not go over well

True enough but I think it's more that they have and ingrained rubbish club culture that families of young men don't want them going there.

We simply have to land someone in the free agency market.

Unrestricted free agent options: Tyson Stengle, Harry Perryman, Josh Battle, Jack Henry (lol), Bailey Banfield, Adam Tomlinson, Elliott Himmelberg. Tempted to list Taylor Walker as an absolute last option for a season, but not sure it makes a lot of sense.

Restricted free agent options: Cameron Zurhaar, Ben Ainsworth (Berry and Hardwick on the verge of re-signing with their team, otherwise would list).

Imagine a fwd line with Hill-Schultz-Stengle... then adding a quality key forward to that would be very hard to stop. I'm just worried about trading options without a first round pick this year.

For all the Saints naysayers on F/S and academies, given the Saints are so against it I will be happy to receive Michito Owens and Marcus Windhager off them out of courtesy just for having to hear them go on whinging.

just heard on the radio Stengle has signed with the cats for 5 years, knocking back 6 years and more money at St Kilda, something else for them to complain about.

yeah let em suffer in their jocks.

but FA certainly being drained of candidates this year. The PA will be happy claiming players are exercising their rights to get the best deal with their preferred home clubs but makes things difficult when you bolt you're list management to FA's and trades.

We're almost in a no-mans land. Schultz has improved as the year's gone but jury is still out on that trade whether it was worth giving up a 1st round draft pick. Injuries aside we could have retained P18 and P34, played Harvey Harrison, Joe Richards or Lachie Sullivan early and had a go at this years draft or trades.

Can't look back however as we are here, just inside the 8 with a diminished FA pool and little trade capital. We're either forcing liked valuable players out to get someone in or we're picking speculative DFA's SSPs and hoping for low draft pick gems. It's also going to make us older next year as we'll be less likely to force retirees and reduce our top end performance by another old age football year (maybe extending Howe and Sidey?

Based on form and age Johnson, Ryan and Begg + Carmichael the possible outs at this time. Howe and Sidey a chance to retire and Mitchell could opt out of his final year. That's a lot of speculative picks to cover deep in the draft, DFA, SSP and we may hold one over to the 2025 MSD.

They're just butthurt they haven't had any good F/S or academy products over the years. They're nothing other than an irrelevance with a tragic history.

Is Toby Greene disgruntled at GWS? 2 years remaining on his contract at $800k a year. Turns 31 in September. He wants to win and possibly can't see it happening at GWS.

FA market always starts to dry up during a season. And this year is no exception.

...but

Stengle is gone, and was very unlikely to land here anyway. Many others on the list (Berry, Hardwick, Henry etc) are expected to announce their re-signings soon.

Zurhaar has to be our priority target. After that Battle, Ainsworth and Perryman. After that Elliott Himmelberg. Banfield I'm unsure on. Older guys like Tomlinson and Walker I am also unsure on.

I'd like to see what trade targets people have in mind as I'm a little worried about our value of draft picks.
