I reckon Frank we should try and snare a pick in the top 25 and use that pick on Cousins.

No team will use a top 20 pick on Cousins, you are 100% spot on that pick 11 is too valuable to use on a guy who has 2 years left in him.

But, if we keep that, but gain another top 25 pick, just consider that a bonus and get Cousins.

It probably means sacrificing Egan or Johnson or maybe Rhyce. I hope we keep Rhyce.

Otherwise you offer Egan + 3rd round for a 2nd round and then you can further do Ben Johnson for a supplementary 3rd round pick.

But i reckon many clubs would instantly become interested in Cousins if he is still in the draft post pick 30

has anyone given some thought to the fact that Cousins may well have three or four years left in him?

Perhaps I'm just expressing my own concern about it. Do you have any conditions I should know about?

People, we have half our 'starting' team under 21 years of age. We have many young players, and quite a few QUALITY players who should develop into stars (Cloke, Thomas, Pendlebury, H.Shaw, etc.), plus Reid, Brown, O'Brien, Goldsack, Clarke, etc. I've just listed HALF the team (9 players, who should develop into starters next year). Add to them Fraser, Didak, Swan, Maxwell ... we have more than a dozen players who should be top-line members of the CFC. What we need now is to plug holes with experienced guns, such as Cousins, Kerr, Rutton, etc. If all we do is keep recruiting raw, young players, we'll have Didak, Fraser, Swan etc. passin 30 while the new young crop begin to develop. The cycle will never end. You have to recognise your window for success, and build towards it. Our window should be open 2009-2013 if we keep the core together. Young guns are not our priority any more. We have enough of them. We need quality, experienced onballers to play meaningful minutes during our window for success.

Agree with that. Wouldn't be using pick 11 on him. Pick 29 should do the trick.

Obviously I'd prefer to take him in the PSD. But would accept using a second round pick on him in the National, though definitely not pick 11. We do have Reed coming in with our last pick, and he's been touted as a potential second rounder.

All this discussion could be for naught, it is still possible he won't make it back at all .

but then on the other side of the coin the gold coast side will be coming in a few years so i guess topping up on young players could be a bonus as well
So with our first pick, you want us to take a 2 year player instead of a 10 year player?

Yeah right!!
dont know about you BUT i want pies to win a flag like within the next 3-5 years NOT wait another 32 years for another 1. look at the side we have atm we have the team to do it.
I know this
Cousins is not as valuable as pick 11 in this years draft

Once you have got that worked out, the rest is easy
when u get some brains and relize that getting cousins then a 18 yo raw kid will be better for our side for a grand final win.

come talk some more when grow up and face it a cousins will help our side more then what a 18 yo will, who will only play 1-6 games (maybe in his 1st year)
See, now you have strayed into an area, that I know, you know nothing about.

You only have to look at how poorly the Eagles have performed over the last 12 months to see what difference class midfielders can make to a team, ie, when they had gun midfielders they were dominant and without them just ordinary. We have enough young talent to run the risk of taking a mature player early in the draft (if he can nominate for draft), and I believe he does have 3 - 4 years in him. We are facing a number of iminent retirements & delistings and he is one player who could make a difference and have an impact. Give him a one year deal, performance based if not up to scratch after year 1 delist and move on. Nothing ventured nothing gained, and the draft is a lottery anyway.

The draft's not quite a lottery, but continuing with your analogy - if it is a lottery, utilising as many picks as possible would be the key. Increasing your chances of hitting upon a superstar (worked for the Hawks).

Cousins would certainly be a nice addition to our team, and if Burns retires, a virtual necessity for the short-term. However, we are still developing, and he's unlikely to take us to a premiership. We still have gaps to fill in our team for the future, and can certainly not afford to use pick 11 on him. A second round pick would be the absolute maximum, though I'd still have some reservations.

The most we could expect him to play would be two years. It's possible he could play for longer, but it would likely be at a diminished capacity. There are few 33+ year olds playing in the league, let alone playing consistently well.

I dont think its a matter of losing Didak. From all reports he is keen to stay a Magpie...he has done everything right since the suspension, and his preference would be to remain in the black and white.

Its up to us if we want to keep him or not.

Adding Didak and Cousins to the side next year Round 1 would be better than any first round draft pick.

If we snared Cousins, I'd like to keep our first round pick and pick up a gun midfielder.

I dont think we are in the running for Kerr but would like to have a play

on Prismall or Harris if available.
Agree with you Dave.
Can some one explain to me, if the Eagles sacked Cousins..............are they now not in th equation??

I suppose they would be in the equation. They would have the same right as any to pick him up in a draft.

But you would highly doubt it given the Eagles are in rebuilding mode. They'll stick to playing Selwood, Ebert and Masten through the middle, and take the best available kids in the draft.
