I'd imagine his manager would be furious if he came out and said "I love it here and I'm staying". It would weaken their bargaining position considerably.

There's a fair few people reading a bit much in to a response that had clearly been rehearsed with his management prior to being interviewed.

Petracca has already re-signed with Melbourne.

Not sure what the hold up is with Scharenberg and Freeman as the actions of Petracca is more the norm for players who suffer a serious injury in there first season or two.

Players in that situation are generally just happy to be guaranteed a decent wage for a couple of more seasons at least until they get healthy and back out on the oval.

I'm sure Shaz will re-sign after playing consecutive senior games. Bucks has already locked him in for the game against the scum.

I'd be more concerned if Freeman had signed on and Berg hadn't. We will wait and see, but after the dramas of the BK/Broomy contract sagas last year I'm refusing to be drawn in to stressing about it. If it gets to the end of September and he hasn't signed, then I'll start to worry.

He just said he wouldn't be considering his contract until the season was over.

The club may also be waiting on what they can offer given the potential signings from outside.

It must be hard to lock in all of these younger players without knowing how draft day will play out with any big contract $ moves in the pipeline.

Personally that interview has me thinking he may not stay. Last year with Beams the rumours being hotly debated by us supporters, I was pretty sure he would stay... we did ok with that trade btw so I dont question the capability of the people in charge.

Let's not forget, Scharenberg isn't a free agent.
If he wants to leave we don't have to trade him to SA.
He could go into the draft and finish up at Brisbane.
So, if he stays, great.
If he leaves, Crows or PA would have to put up a good trade, which might help us get Treloar.

Now that's a bit concerning to my ears. He was given a direct question about staying at Collingwood and he chose to give a non-answer; a politicians answer. He could have said things like, the club has been fantastic to me and my signature is a lock as soon as the season is over, but yeah, I'm definitely keen to stay.......he said nothing like that. It sounded like he had been schooled in how to answer the question and how to avoid a direct answer.

From that interview I get the impression Matt is off home come October.

I agree with Neil and Rudeboy. It sounded very bad. His scripted non-answer avoided any mention of Collingwood at all. He didn't need to give the really committal responses Neil and Rudeboy suggest, but in reply to the direct question "Do you want to stay at Collingwood?", it's simple and natural just to say "Yes, I do" -- with, or without some extra fluff, such as "... so hopefully my management and the club can sort out the details".

Other footballers in this situation have said that. And one doesn't need to be an extrovert to say that. And, being non-committal, it doesn't weaken your negotiating power.

The tone of his voice at that part of the interview also seemed a worry (e.g. around 7:18 and 7:27, listen to the quiver and tight breathing).

No point in panicking or analysing every breath the bloke takes. He'll either re-sign or not, let's just wait and see. Rubbishing him in anticipation is unfair, we have got it very wrong before (Cloke, Broomhead).

Inky, who is rubbishing him? I don't think anyone is (unlike in the Cloke case). Who is panicking? Not me (though it's a little saddening). If indeed he currently wishes to leave, the club could still change his mind (by some combination of carrot and stick) or get a fair trade for him.

Who is analysing every breath he takes? We're just listening to an interview and considering it's possible or likely (not certain) implications, as non-autistic people are wont to do. Pollyannas here, using bad arguments, are claiming the probabilities lean one way; the interview evidence (just listen to it!), both spoken and unspoken, suggests the probabilities lean the other way.

My previous post probably reads harsher than intended, I've no problem with speculation.
