It's our fault if we don't because then we are paying too much for ordinary players and not enough for the great ones.

The AFL claims to be fully professional. Well, this last bastion of amateurism must go. Kids are drafted to clubs they don't even barrack for, to cities or states they'd rather not play in. They have no say in the matter. No wonder they welcome free trade with open arms. Players are not slaves. They are employees. They owe no loyalty to clubs because they know the moment Father Time catches up with them they'll be dumped like a sick dog. Just ask Brad Sewell (age 30!). How about someone ask Luke Ball or Heath Shaw about loyalty? (it works both ways).
That's actually a good unfortunately true post. Can't blame Beams or his reasoning, but he should also remember the club stuck by him in tough times. And if we can't get a fair deal from Brisbane, he should not oppose GC if we can get the deal done there. Most of us don't get the fairy tale ending, we just toddle along, and he should be grateful Collingwood are trying to help him. And he may be, who knows?

My thoughts exactly......, but it cuts both ways. In a culture where clubs act ruthlessly, players are entitled to look out for their own interests.
Is that because it's a double edged sword?

Can't blame players for leaving for more dosh or other reasons. Can't blame Collingwood supporters for considering them traitors and scum. It works both ways.

God it's sad. He's not even out the door and were making plans to boo him. I can't believe people expect loyalty from players but aren't prepared to give any.
Players should be loyal to clubs but clubs can flick a player on a whim. Where's the balance?
The only way a player who has bled for the Black and White should be treated with disdain by supporters is when it is known, for a fact, that a player has left simply for a huge pay day, but it doesn't happen often, even Buddy had other reasons besides the millions.

I too dislike free agency, it creates mercenaries. I also believe that a kid should be able to nominate his preferred club and be given some kind of help to get there, no guarantees, but something like a watered down Father /Son thing. The idea that if you're the best kid in the draft you hafta go to the worst side in the comp is ridiculous and rewards failure. There can be no doubt that sides who know that they've missed the finals will want to finish as low as possible, and this will only get worse as time goes on.
I'd also like to see a cap on what a player in our game can earn. It won't be long before we see guys getting 5-10 million

We seem to be falling over ourselves to do whatever America is doing, while their sports are turning into an unsustainable joke. Player strikes, cancelled seasons, ridiculous paydays for kids leading to crime, misery, insane gate prices and constantly lower attendances.

Ignore America, run Australian Sport the Australian way.

Read your own post. Read it again. Think about Nathan Buckley.

When he leaves, and I understand why he is leaving, he is just another player who I will boo more than others and I will reserve the right to remind him of what a dog act he was involved in after the 2010 grand final. The one in which the club sacrificed one of his mates to save his bacon.

As is my right as a feral pies supporter.

My thoughts exactly. I would ideally like a loyalty-based system too, but it cuts both ways. In a culture where clubs act ruthlessly, players are entitled to look out for their own interests.
I barrack for the club, the players are simply the individuals who should be honoured to represent it on the field.

I expect players to be loyal to the club and it's supporters, if they retire I wish them nothing but the best, if they chose to leave I see it as a betrayal. If the club decides that a player no longer has a role then out they go, see you later.

Is it a double-standard? Not really, because the competition is about the success of clubs, not players. I barrack for Collingwood. Ive seen my favourite players come and go and guess what?

Many of those players work at other clubs now. However I'm still here and so is the Club.

We expect our club to be successful, and let's be honest, loyalty to the players is actually low on our agenda. We love them at their best, but when they're done it's not just the club that wants them out, it's us.

We must treat them well and with total respect (unless they burn us) but that's all. When they can no longer contribute at the required level then they have to go.

And we're right to think that way.

The salary cap and list-limits have much to do with how ruthless clubs have become, as does free-agency. It's pushing up the price of players like Cloke, forcing clubs to pay overs, often at the expense of the free-agent's team-mates.

These 'pro-player' changes only serve to put disloyalty on the books as an entitlement and an expectation. It puts the wishes of a relative handful of players (the elite who were already doing exceptionally well), ahead of the needs of the competition itself.

Essendon have just rejected Port's offer of pick 16 for Ryder.

We should watch this closely because Ryder is also a contracted player, is about half as good a footballer as Beams and, unlike Beams, can probably just break his contract because of the "ASADA matters" if Essendon is insufficiently accommodating.

I am, of course, assuming that at some stage this Dayne Beams thread will go to the DTM forum, where it has always belonged.
