Saints pass on Cousins

Just read on the AFL website that after a 2+ hour 'secret meeting', key St.Kilda figures have decided against recruiting Ben Cousins.

I for one did not see this coming. I thought it was almost a certainty that they'd pick him up.

I feel better now that Collingwood passed on him earlier on in the race, even after the whole 'private investigator' fiasco. I don't know what the key brass at St.Kilda talked about to unanimously make their decision, but there clearly must be something up with him. Maybe he just interviews poorly.

I have stated before that I would be surprised if any Club would take the risk and pick him up.

All I can say is that I am glad our Club made the right decision.

Cousins unfortunetly will not be remembered as a great of the game(as I believe he is or could have been). Now he will be remembered as a Elite sportsman that became addicted to drugs.

I would be very surprised if the Bears pick him up. I wonder if the money for his documentary was based on the contract that a Club pick him up.

I just don't see how a 30 Year Old could really contribute much. Add to that he has not played a game for almost 2 years, and he is a drug/recovering addict.

MM, Eddie and Pert, please promise not to do a backflip. I personally do not want him at Pieland.

Only thing that really worries me is that the Pies spoke with C.Nixon who has now been proven to speak some untruths.

I hope the Pies did their due dilligence on this one.

I've actually gone off Cousins. I wanted him badly, but the fact that he has not played any football at all this past year suggests he's not really fair dinkum. You'd think he would have been ripping it up at VFL or WAFL level this year to prove his worth. Maybe he was afraid of doing another hammy, which is a worry in itself. I get the feeling that if he was in good shape and raring to go then we would have pursued him. Turning up shaven, when he was to provide a hair sample was not a good sign. Sadly, I'm over Ben.

Thought so too. If football is integral to his rehabilitation, he could've showed he's got the necessary stuff doing it in those leagues.

^^

Must be because his hammy is dodgy still. Oh and by the way did someone mention he is a DRUG ADDICT!!!

The first could be overlooked by Clubs...but the second...mmmm NO!

This all just goes to show the AFL is no longer about the on-field team but about off-field politics.

You have a group of St.Kilda players saying how they would love to have him in their side. It was common knowledge both the coach and his players were keen on Cousins.

Yet the board vote against it.

Don't think Lyon was keen, was he? I thought he had serious concerns?

Dave

I would love Ben Cousins the footballer in our side... I think all West Coast players and supporters would still want Ben and maybe all other teams would want Ben the player... but behind the mask is Ben the drug addict.. a person who has shown he cannot yet be trusted and is yet to prove that he would not go back to his old ways as he did at West Coast.

Too much baggage, to much risk, Ben still thinks he and his manager can manipulate the AFL and its regulations the same way as he did the law when he was arrested in Perth

Still I love Ben the player

Ricky Nixon, who manages Ben Cousins, was seen chatting with Collingwood football boss Geoff Walsh. What could that mean?
:?

though nixon did say he wasn't expecting cousins to get picked up today.

I just heard on midday news on MMM that Cuz wasn't selected and also that the Lions will not be taking him in the PSD, so it might be all over for his career.

looks over. All i can say is that a few clubs passed on draft selections so may be considering him in the PSD. But very unlikely now.

I simply cant believe it.

Well i suppose its up to Ben now in the next few weeks to absolutely prove beyond all doubt that he is clean. There are many clubs participating in the PSD and not many big names.

He has to convince 100% he is clean. As his manager, I would be advising him to submit to as many tests, getting on TV, doing charity, doing anti-drug campaigning.

Whatever info the clubs have on him is obviously a factor....but it is in the past. The future is whats important. If he is too stubborn to submit to such testing then he has ruined his own career.
