Of course he wants a chance to demonstrate his worth on the field to strengthen his bargaining position for his next contract. That doesn't make him any less committed to the club than those that have signed.

He's also a top 10 draft pick and is highly regarded by most outsiders who have seen him play. Given that, I wouldn't think an asking price of $400k (if that is what is being asked) is too far outside the ballpark. Why so keen to pot him on next to no information?
There's a long list of top 10 picks who were highly regarded and disn't live up to the hype, I've seen absolutely nothing to suggest this kid is going to an elite player, in fact I see signs he won't be, looks disinterested at times and certainly doesn't show The amount of desperation-hunger that is required for the highest level, he doesn't have any physical attributes that set him apart from the rest either.

I realize he's coming from a long way back and will improve over time, I just expected more, him asking for 400k is ridiculous and ill be furious if we pay it.
I disagree regarding his ability, yes he needs to improve his running, intensity at the ball & one on one battles, however he was involved in several forward moves that resulted in goals, skills and decision making is his gift, the rest can be taught.
Is be happy to give him a 1 year deal for 250k, that will give him the chance to show us what he's got and if he's 'got it' (like many think) his next contract will reflect that, but matching the rumoured Crows deal will lock us in for 4 years, we'd be insane to take such a risk on an unproven player considering we'll be well compensated if he leaves, if we were going to lose him for nothing the risk might be worth taking, as I said earlier a top 12 DP would probably have more impact in the short term anyway as SHazza looks a mile off being elite ATM.

We also don't want to send the wrong message to our other young guns, we want players who are committed to our cause, if one asks for more than he's worth it means someone has to take less, and when that player asking for more is someone who has shown nothing team harmony can head south real fast.

Give him $300 k plus performance based bonus structure. He and the club are both in a difficult position. Football careers can be very short and players need to max their return. There is nothing wrong with a young gun having faith in his ability and attempting to get a reasonable return.

Technically I'm sure he could Dave, but this would simply result in a whole year of further speculation of 'will he or won't he'. It would also signal a lack of commitment to being a long term Collingwood player.

Finally, my negative comments about his negotiating tactics are really criticisms of his manager. After all, he is just a 19 yr old kid, so it's wrong of me to blame him for such stuff. It seems to me he either has a poor manager, or else his manager has been scheming all along to screw the club. In the short term that may win him some extra cash - paid by us or the Crows - but in the long term, it risks tainting him as a selfish, and somewhat delusional, player, who is not team oriented. I really hope this kid is getting some sensible advice from somewhere.
Like when Pendlebury signed a 1 year contract extension?

Personally I'm amazed that anyone is potting a 2nd year player coming off 2 years of injuries to actually make the senior team. There are probably experienced players who would struggle to have any impact with the lack of fitness base he has had.

As for reports of $400k that might not be too far off the mark - don't forget the AFLPA will be haggling massively for a large slice of the new TV rights deal so maybe the deal they are after might rise to $400k depending on new salary caps etc.

Unless you have been in everyone of those contract negotiations you dont know if what you are saying has any truth at all (and neither do I so you may be right but it's not fact)
Yeah, I can understand some fans being concerned, but making stuff up on very little information to paint the kid in the worst possible light is pretty weak. First people had convinced themselves he was leaving because one or two journos raised the question and he showed a lack of enthusiasm in an interview. Now it's acknowledged he may stay but is making unrealistic demands, again on almost no information.

Also, what about Freeman? He seems to be getting off scott free at the moment, despite being in the same situation :D.

Freeman's a bit different, clubs won't be lining up to poach him given his ongoing issues, I'm guessing we won't offer him more than 2 years on lowish coin.

If it isn't done by mad Monday I reckon we can kiss him good bye, it's one thing to tell the coach you want to stay face to face, and another to do so via your manager when you're out of the state.

If he hasn't signed before he heads home he won't come back.

Looking at the picture I don't believe Varcoe & Grundy are displaying sufficient enthusiasm, trade them NOW!

He's still "holding out" though. Why hasn't he re-signed like everyone else?

Maybe we're holding out, would it be completely out of the question that we want to demote him to the rookie list for a year?

Obviously we wouldn't, but if he went pick 38 we certainly would, if not delist.

Who knows? The point is we could take the harshest possible line on the kid as some have done with Scharenberg with very little extra justification.

That's our job, the club comes first, if rumours surface about freeman wanting 400k we'll turn on him faster than Labour Party does on its leader.

^Actually, not your job or anyone else on here. Why feel the need to turn on people based upon rumours which surface as you claim?
