Post subject: Demetriou's regime made tanking inevitable. | |

Here is a great article by Anson Cameron. The best thing I have read on why (1) tanking was inevitable, and (2) the AFL was to blame for making defeat more valuable than victory for poor clubs.

I really like the point about only STUPID people losing money because they were prepared to bet on Melbourne when it was obvious the Dees had every incentive to lose (priority picks).
How do you think we managed to pick up Pendlebury and Thomas in the same year? |

We list managed our players - sending for surgery etc (ultimately the same thing but different in manner).

Doesn't seem to offer any solutions...

We are not the only sport in the world, look at a more successful model of play.
I said stone him as a joke, but quite frankly I hate the prick and what he has done to the footy. _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

It's time for that clown to follow AA and exit stage left. |

JW, the priority pick system was designed in the age of Sydney and Fitzroy winning one match a year each in the early to mid-'90s. It should have become obvious by well into Jackson's (and then Demetriou's) stewardship that the rule had been poorly implemented and was no longer serving its purpose. It simply took them far, far too long to do anything about it, and it resulted in the farcical consequences we're seeing now. The article, IMHO, gets it dead-on. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Fair point... strangely enough, the powers that be seem to have no problem changing plenty of other rules pretty much every season, but have never really looked into the heart of this one, despite making a couple of changes recently, the core problem of the priority picks (incentive to 'tank') hasn't been addressed, despite solutions being canvassed in the press and on places like here (an NFL type lottery for example). |

Just remember, no one is to start stoning anyone until the umpire blows the whistle... even if they do say "tanking" or "priority pick".

Vlad seems keen enough to adopt a bunch of other things from other sports. You'd imagine that the lottery system would be something he'd be only too keen to import! _________________ One team, one dream - the Pies and this year's premiership |
