You've got a TV in your donga !!!
I googled it. I'm guessing your donga is a "Portable building site hut ".
Never heard of that definiton before.
I've only ever heard about being as dry as a dead dingo's donga.
And I'm pretty sure they weren't talking about the poor mutt's shed. |

Really, never heard of a donga?!
They're pretty well decked out these days.
When I first worked on Baroow Island in the late 80's dongas were tiny with nothing more than a shitty single bed, a wardrobe, a small bin (that doubled as an ice bucket) & a noisy old wall rattler air-con.
Now you have a large plasma tv with foxtel, an ensuite, a comfy king single bed, desk, double wardrobe with drawers, a fridge & a daikin spilt system air con. _________________ Don't count the days, make the days count. |

My main criterion is that the news source is non-paywall, Dave.
After that, many different sources find it into my news feed (Play Newsstand on Android). Unfortunately, the serious conservative rags, which I would like to read more of, tend paywall. _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

The Australian is quite expensive for a digital newspaper and it's by far the best 'Conservative' newspaper in this country. The Financial Review is free I think.
Wall Street Journal is paywalled as far as international goes and apart from those most other conservative news outlets are tabloid in nature.
Drudge report is where I'd point you for conservative US news though PtiD, nothing like that here, we have to rely on Mr. Murdoch and news.com.au is the only free one. At least with his love for open borders you'd have something in common. |

Interesting stereotypes.
I read the Herald Sun for light news and sport, News.com.au is also pretty good for general and better for international news.
The Aged I read for the sport, politics and IT/business stuff as it's generally more detail than the Herald Sun although I don't like how much of the content on their website takes you to the puffenstuff post.
The Guardian has a few good pieces but I generally find it rubbish as they don't even try to provide balance _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

I've been tempted to buy a subscription to the New Yorker given that I read it so often nowadays. But it's hard to get into that mindset of paying for online news when we've been getting it for free for so long. That's the whole trouble with the model: they left it too late to implement this stuff and now nobody wants to pay (and if they do go behind a paywall, crap sites like the Huffington Post, Daily Mail and Junkee get all the traffic as a result). I agree that people who value serious news should be prepared to pay for it, and there's no good excuse not to. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange

I am only a . Yes I try to pay as often as possible, do you? I chat with people on the Web. Yes to lack the ability to develop emotional connection I think that is what I meant. Was it not clear? |

Yeah, I would get the FT if I were going to pay. But, it's not good value if you're a skim-then-drill-down newsreader. I skim the free stuff, then I drill down with searches all the way to specialist blogs and academic stuff. So, I jump from the topic and a brief overview to beyond what the FT, as good as it tries to be, covers. So, they're not providing me much of worth, despite being good at what they do. They're in a mid-point of coverage that's no good to me, but would definitely work if I were an investment banker, say.
The Australian is hopelessly propagandistic and predictable, so that's of no value at all.
On economics, by the time you read the best blogs and Fed Reserve reports, you've bettered anything you might pay for. The same goes for technology, science, urban planning, environmental science and pdychology. No rag can compete with that, which is why the NYTimes hires Krugman on economics and Glaeser on urban economics/ urban issues. But you can access their blogs and many articles and lectures freely, anyhow (not illegally, but through their other work).
So, it is false to say that one ought to pay beyond advertising. If paid journalism offers nothing more, bad luck.
The New Yorker for investigative work, the FT for politics/banking, and some specialist rags, and such, are the only ones *worth* paying for. Also, advertising consumption *is* paying; not acknowledging that is extremely old hat. The only thing you might validly oppose there is ad blocking, which might be a worthy Nick's thread.
However, readers who want things in one curated, neat shot, would certainly get value from subscriptions to rags like the NYTimes, or populist-level field mags, such as Scientific American / Scientific American Mind. _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

As someone who uses adblocker, I definitely think that's a worthy line of enquiry. Never even thought to consider that in ethical/consequentialist terms, but you're right of course: as consumers, we have to be actively thinking about funding models and how essential they are to propping up these publications. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |
