JW said on another thread that it was all about community.
And that Collingwood was ahead of the pack when it came to community involvement.
it is hard to argue against this as it is like arguing against motherhood.
Questions that could be asked.
How much did we pay for this franchise.
Is there a business plan
Will it distract certain personnel from their main duties
What happens if there is some sort of scandal (drugs etc...)
Will sharing of the facilities impact us in any way, shape or form.
What is the case for us trying to move outside of our traditional role.
Does it have an impact on our constitution
There are probably many many questions that could be asked.
I am not totally against this, just very unsure of what is the point of it all.
Trying to make us the biggest sporting club is not what I think is in our best interest. |
had a listen to netball australia's ceo, kate plamer, who made mention the new australian only comp was all about (or very much about) community. i dare suggest this aligns with what collingwood wants to achieve and/or vice versa. without seeing the proposal or business case or even their strategic plan it is only conjecture on my part. also, we don't know the value of the media rights deal with channel 9 and telstra. it's a slice of the pie only three footy clubs have access to.
no doubt, in the fullness of time we will see the outcome of this evolution. back in the 70s and early 80s a national comp would have been unthinkable. players getting paid to be full time professionals looked a stretch to far. that we have only two afl grounds in melbourne was something many of us hadn't envisaged way back when. the collingwood footy club may become a community hub servicing many different societal needs (if it isn't already). if nothing else it should insure the future of the club whatever form it takes. _________________ Purveyor of sanctimonious twaddle. |

I just wonder are we living in the past and believing in our own propaganda. |
No, Melbourne Victory is the biggest club in Australia. |

Anyway, back on topic, I don't mind the club expanding into other areas as long as is doesn't adversely effect our main aim, which no matter what Gary Pert or Eddie says, is to win AFL premierships.
Time will tell whether branching out into netball and other sports will help or hinder us in that goal.
I'm willing to wait and see before shouting it down straight off. |

^ i would have thought eddie and pert were the best people in positions of authority to determine or influence the aims of the club. is this something the members should have been able to vote on? _________________ Purveyor of sanctimonious twaddle. |

As long as it doesn't leach money from the football side, I have no issues.
It shouldn't be a distraction as the Board and CEO have people employed to run the football department, as they'll employ people to run the Netball department and the Womens football department. A Collingwood branded Netball or Womans footy team can leverage off the main brand and should be able to attract sponsorship in excess of a stand alone startup in either league which will defray costs.

Remember we have a cap on the footy department now.
With professional afl women's and netball, we have an opportunity to distribute shared sporting coaching and sport science. Such as high performance, recovery, injury prevention, injury recovery, strength and fitness, wellbeing etc etc. |
I think you're onto something here Melliot. Gubby Allan doesn't come under the football dept and this gives us scope to boost I'm every area outside the cap. Genius if that's the plan. _________________ 'Collingwood are the Bradmans of Football'

Yes that is a very good point.
Now we can appoint a ruck coach and call him the wing attack netball coach.
And not declare it under the footy department. _________________ we don't eat our own at collingwood we just allow them to foul our nest. |

not so sure. may just be a timing thing because if the genesis was seven years ago it would just so happen to be an incredible aligning of the planets for it all to come to fruition now at a time when its presence would be extremely convenient for the afl operations. _________________ Purveyor of sanctimonious twaddle. |

It is a can of worms
What is footy department spending and what is netball spending?
it is a problem when you diversify.
You don't know what is coming over the hill.
This could be an issue. _________________ we don't eat our own at collingwood we just allow them to foul our nest. |

Think you'll find this is the price the club pays for government investment in the Westpac centre. Our pitch for the development of Olympic park etc involved a commitment to broader community engagement if I remember correctly. |

We are the Collingwood Football Club; not the Collingwood Sports Club and certainly not the Collingwood Community Club.
All very well to do things for "the community" such as those Christmas lunches they do and certain initiatives to help out here or there - but to try and claim to be a community club is a bit rich.
Sunshine YCW, Preston RSL, Maribyrnong Park, Craigieburn, Albion, Deer Park, etc, etc, etc - are community clubs. |
no one is claiming to be a "community club". one of the club's values is "community" which i believe has been incorrectly interpreted as such.
i don't see anything wrong with what the club is wanting to achieve even though i may not necessarily apportion any discretionary income to the other ventures. |
late last night i heard eddie refer to the clubs as "community clubs" in his commentary about the next cba and the players' demands for a percentage of the revenue. _________________ Purveyor of sanctimonious twaddle. |

I agree, the rush of almost all AFL clubs to get aligned to a netball team must have something behind it other than good old community spirit, and I suspect the above is the reason _________________ "The last thing he expected WAS THE FIRST THING HE GOT!!!!!"

when Clubs talk about "community" what they are actually talking about is access to government funds. doesn't mean that the holden centre will be turned into a community/welfare centre _________________ Pain heals, Chicks dig scars, Glory..... lasts forever! |
