Barnett about to concede. Listen for him to blame his party machine for the preference deal with the people in the white pointy hats (and with the white pointy heads). |

That's a sensible, rational prediction.
You forgot one thing.
We are talking about Queensland.
One Nation will take seats in Queensland. Bet money on it. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

So, it looks like the next big political thread will be "Fluoride Free WA on the rise". |

I would suggest that Donald Trumps extreme Right Wing Policies on play have damaged One Nation as they are pushing a similar agenda. Throw in when the Senator opens her mouth she gets exposed every time (as per her last foray into Politics). Throw in when you bar certain sections of the media it also comes back to bite you in the arse. The brilliant fiscal managers (LNP) have also failed once again and their federal counterparts are doing the same. In saying that politics have changed, people want results and want them now and I will add that the decades of selling off our assets and utilities to private companies have come back to bite all Governments in the arse. |

In the wash-up, One Nation looks to have finished up with 4.75% of the primary vote, against predictions that its vote would be as high as 15%.
The populist media has a great deal to answer for, doesn't it?
The One Nation vote was way less than the Green vote in this election but no one asked the Greens what they thought about anything. Presumably this is because some of them have IQs over 73 and don't utter complete non-sequiturs when they speak, so they aren't good TV.

^^The Greens do not get much of mention in the mainstream media other than continual condemnation that they are left wing nutters with outlandish policies that do not have Australia's best interest whatsoever. Yet their support keeps growing. |

Another factor regarding the Greens in WA is that there used to be WA Liberal Greens. In other words. the Greens in WA were not limited to the so called "Watermelon Greens" which some might say characterize the NSW Greens of Lee Rhiannon et al that Bob Brown has been so damning about. I share some of Bob's concerns here.
The Greens in WA out polled the NATS, One Notion & other nutter fringe groups
like the Fluoride & shooters party. Yet as you note their voice has barely been heard. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

The ALP's primary vote is well over 40%. That too is quite remarkable in this day & age.
However, notwithstanding this Landslide win, showing the ineptitude & incompetence of One Notion is a poisoned chalice. WA's economy makes Greece look good. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

The 2 major factors were nobody can stand Barnett and ON giving their preferences to his party.
This isn't about how good the ALP are, it's more about how bad Barnett was.
WA's economy would be a lot healthier if we got more than the current 30% of the GST this state generates.
Recall that Western Australias share of the GST for this financial year is a mere 38c in the dollar. And if the recommendation of the Commonwealth Grants Commission is accepted by Joe Hockey, Western Australias share next year will be under 30c.
And wait, theres more: the state is slated to get less in nominal terms next financial year ($1.935 billion) than this financial year ($2.248bn). Lets face it, a difference of $300 million is not chicken feed it pays for a lot of teachers, nurses, doctors and the like. It also contributes to the cost of the additional infrastructure Western Australia needs to service a growing population.
To add insult to injury, tiny Tasmania will receive more in absolute terms than Western Australia next financial year $2.236bn if the grants commissions recommendation is implemented. Note that Tasmanias population is one-fifth of Western Australias.

I think you can be reasonably satisfied with OneRacist Nation's electoral performance - that was a job well done.
Sometimes, when the incumbent government is on the nose, votes leak in significant numbers to parties of the same general political hue. The fact that the Libs polled so poorly but OneXenophobia couldn't capitalise says quite a bit about the latter's complete electoral irrelevance in WA.
In fact, the ALP gained twice as many votes as OneIDon'tLikeArabs polled.
You can stick with your "it was the preference deal" analysis and I'll stick with my "the vast majority of Western Australians don't like dumb racists" analysis. |

Good point. The commercial TV media in particular really seem to love Hanson. If the Greens were half as extreme as the Murdoch papers want us to believe, perhaps we'd get to hear more shock-horror headlines about the crazy thing they just said. Is it possible that they're actually just kind of boring and sensible? _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange

On current counting, it looks like PHONy will do very well in the Upper House - the ABC is predicting 15 seats for the ALP, 9 for the Libs, 4 for the Nats, the Greens with 3 (and near becoming the third largest voting bloc in the State), the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers with 2 and Fluoride Free WA, the Liberal Democrats and OneNotion with 1 each.
