A media person from Louie Richards era said the burst of pace over the first 10 meters was a crucial weapon for a player _________________ I'm not arguing--just explaining why i am right |

Yes, that's why they do 20m testing (which also records 5m, 10m splits) at the draft Combine: they believe that's what's most relevant for AFL.
Some other sports prefer 40m or 40 yards. |

It was, of course, a huge loss in this area that Caolan Mooney didn't work out. Should we have tried him off half-back? |

We'll need to be quick if we're going to win on Anzac Day.

In the VFL:
Nathan Murphy has serious speed, as does Tyler Brown. Appleby has outstanding endurance and I am bullish about McLarty as he has a good tank for a bigger player. _________________ Firm in the belief that number 17 flag is only months away... |

If we're talking absolute speedsters, I think we've added three recently:
Murrray, Stephenson, WHE.
To our defence, we have also added two with moderate speed and acceleration that also help to give us some bounce:
Crisp and Maynard.
Quality runners that have been added would include those as well as:
Treloar, Philips, Varcoe, Aish, Thomas, Greenwood.
This is a major transformation of a side that once lacked players that could cover the ground. It's been building for a while now and included failed additions like Freeman and Mooney. We haven't simply improved overnight. _________________ Well done boys! |

Agree, the bombers are quick.
At least the biter is out but Fantasia has had a couple days out against us.
You would think Murray would go to him but it has to be a collective effort from the back six and midfield support if we’re going to get it done. |

Fantasia has been out all year with a leg injury. Glad J Ramsay isn’t around this Anzac Day _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

Yes, Essendon are better. How did they lose to the Bulldogs tho?
Fantasia did play yesterday and Merrett was not bullied out of the game as he has been in 2018. Daniher is in a form slump, but they move the ball quickly. And between Tippunwuti, Saad and a few others, they can run down anyone that doesnt move the ball fast. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

Indeed. Though Stevo's 20m time at the Combine was not really outstanding. I'm wondering how much the conditions affected the times. It might have been cold and windy, for example. His privately reported (i.e. by one who knows him) best time is good, but still not jaw-droppingly so. The best Pie Combine 20m time by a long way was Marsh. |

Maybe they should do those 20 metre AFL combine sprints with a footy in hand.
From my viewing, I have a perception that Murray appears quicker but maybe that’s because you get the opportunity to run in straighter lines for longer coming out of defence.
Stephenson looks quick but he also has sharp lateral movement to go with it and that makes for the perfect forward ( along with a few other attributes )
Congrats to both of them on their rising star nominations too. |

Interesting comments from Caolan Mooney...
Quote: |
“I wasn’t ready at all,” he admitted. “When I came back I was 93kg. I was playing this year at 84kg. It took me a couple of years to shed a bit of weight and that extra weight I was carrying didn’t help my hamstrings.
“Gaelic football is more about speed and the AFL is more about endurance. It took a toll on the hamstrings playing Gaelic football when I wasn’t physically conditioned for it."
...
The decision to leave Australia he doesn’t regret, not for a minute.
“I had another year left on my contract but I walked away from it,” he said.
“I just didn’t want to play for them anymore. I thought I was missing stuff at home and I decided it was time for me to go. If I had been playing more football over there at senior level it might have changed my mind.”

Quote: | ...
Mooney trained as a professional sportsman for three years in Australia, but he still found it challenging to return home to Gaelic Football and adapt once again to its unique demands.
“Probably just the speed of the game,” he said. “The fitness coming home from Australia for off-season, playing club under-21s, I’d always find I’d be gassed after about fifteen minutes playing Gaelic.
“It’s a different kind of fitness. I think getting yourself tuned into that."
