What they say
A tall athletic defender who has the ability to play one-on- one and defend his direct opponent. Grew in confidence playing for Vic Metro in the National Under-18 Championships, reading the angles well with his intercept marking. Had an excellent year for the Chargers averaging 13.4 disposals and 4.6 marks across nine matches. Son of Collingwood premiership player Craig Kelly and an eligible father-son selection for the Magpies, Kevin Sheehan (AFL Talent Ambassador), AFL.com.au, November 2018
As his confidence grows and grows, how I picture him is a more co-ordinated Matt Scarlett thats how important he could be to a team, Leigh Clarke (Oakleigh U18 coach), Leader Newspapers, July 2018
Demonstrating a playing style not dissimilar to a young Will Schofield, Kelly also possesses speed and enjoys taking on the game with his run. His closing speed allows him to stick close to opposition forwards and in one-on-one contests he is competitive and rarely beaten, Chris Doerre (ESPN draft expert), ESPN.com.au, July 2018
What he says
When you see the (Collingwood) supporter base at games you realise what it means to people and it would be amazing to be in that environment, Will Kelly, afl.com.au, October 2018.
(Having a father who played and worked in the AFL industry) has taught me a lot about the personality you need to walk into an AFL club. The work ethic and organisation, but also the open-mindedness and being open to all the different types of boys that come in, Will Kelly, told to Fox Sports Ben Waterworth, November 2018. |

Did we have the points for him, or did we have to go into deficit to get him? |

What I like about this kid is that he was very good against the best in the U18 championships. He was very competitive and the equal of Lukosius against SA and he stuck it to Brownless against Vic country.
He played against Ben King a couple times in the TAC and it was one all. King really got hold of him late in the season but Kelly might have been carrying the ankle by then. ( obviously he didnt play against Max King because of the ACL )
I reckon this one will be alright |

Apparently we did, because of the consequences of the shuffling of picks after we took Quaynor. Here's Mighty Magpies' comment from his mega thread last night, when he thought we might have use about pick 25 to get Will:

Quaynor
Picks remaining (article above doesn't mention 96, but it is on AFL Draft Tracker):
53 (233)
54 (220)
64 (101)
96 (0)
total 554 points.
NGA/FS on the radar:
Will Kelly (likely ~pick 25)
Atu Bosenavulagi
Bailey Wraith
Pick 25 756 points less 197 point discount = 559 points, so pretty close to covering likely Will Kelly bid.
Any bid after 56 and we can match with our last pick. |
And here's MM's post-selection comment:
MightyMagpie wrote: | We arent in deficit. We still have pick 63 (112 points).
We benefitted from Adelaide trading out those two earlier picks where they may have bid on him. |

The kid has either had a recent growth spurt or we have the Collingwood tape measure out again.
I'm sure he was listed as 193-194 recently, now he's 196? _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

41 (412)
44 (362)
57 (182)
59 (158)
60 (146)
Total 1260 points.
When Tarryn Thomas bid was matched at 8, NM lost picks 42, 47, 48 and 49 and gained picks 65, 95 and 97.
After that we had:
42 (395)
44 (362)
54 (220)
56 (194)
57 (182)
Total 1353 (+93 points).
When Nick Blakey bid was matched at 10, SYD lost picks 34, 39 and 40 and gained picks 47 and 97.
After that we had:
40 (429)
42 (395)
53 (233)
55 (207)
56 (194)

When Isaac Quaynor bid was matched at 13, COL lost picks 40, 42 and 53 and gained picks 64 and 95.
After that we had:
55 (207)
56 (194)
64 (101)
Total 502 points.
By the time Will Kelly was bid on at 29 these picks were:
53 (233)
54 (220)
64 (101)
Total 554 (+52 points).
When Will Kelly bid was matched at 29, COL lost picks 53, 54 and 64 and gained picks 63 and 99.
Obviously we then traded out 63 and picked up Atu at the end. |

Wrapped to get young Will and so stoked for Ned " The Cement Truck". He must be so happy. I really enjoyed Craig talking on the final story for 1990. _________________ " Ohhh Banksy and out comes the Note Book".

I understand he tested well in pinching the skin of the opposition in the draft combine. A "pinchy-pinchy" standout out on both sides of his body. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

Couldn't help but think in the warm up the other night when I saw Kelly had inherited the number 20 guernsey that it was some ominous joke of things to come. Then wouldn't you know it..... snapped collarbone. So let's look at it:
* 2018 TAC Season: 2/3 wiped out due to injury
* 2019: first season at Pies wiped out due to injury
* 2020: 1 game then broken shoulder
* 2021: 1 pre-season game and broken collarbone
Some guys just simply cannot take a trick aka:
* Sean Rusling
* Tom Davidson
* Danny Roach
* Mark Orval
* Chris Dalkin
* Ben Sinclair
* Tom Langdon etc.... _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

It is an unfortunate start to his career but you would rather a couple limb breaks above the waist than broken legs or constant soft tissue issues.
Nothing so far has impacted his pace or an inability to get those miles into his legs. Still disappointing of course.
As a footnote, there were plenty at the Chargers who thought he should have had ankle surgery immediately after that injury.
He chose to play on because it was his draft year and the Chargers were premiership favourites. He didn’t have surgery until well into October and it probably cost him a decent pre season in his first year at the club.
Cant blame the kid for wanting to play footy but it’s not often you get rewarded for bad decisions or bad judgement. |
