This is how we should be assessing the trade, not 2 first rounders.

To me, it was a considered decision. |
This is not the best thread or time to be talking about trades, which has been done to death anyway, but no, you should not assess it in terms of points when it's not a FS pick. Now it's past, you can just assess it by the players you would have had instead (though we don't know the club's internal draft board).
Here's how we should judge what is a considered decision. A decision is considered when everyone in the football department and admin is happy to take ownership for that decision. e.g. Wells was not a considered decision, because everyone at the club blamed someone else for it. |

Beams had a massive 2018 season [and his 2017 was pretty good as well 514 disposals, 20 goals, in a team that won 4 games] and most non-clairvoyant supporters were salivating at the prospect of him doing similar in 2019. Had 36 touches and 3 tackles when we smacked the Tigers upside the head in round 2. 26 against in the Eagles in Perth. 28 touches on ANZAC Day. Was averaging 26 through a very tough first 8 games. Then the wheels fell of his body, or mind, or both, due to stressors.
Until then the drafting department were #winning, to suggest otherwise is denying the recent facts of his performance to that point. _________________ Get back on top. |

There were very mixed feelings on this BB at the time about the trade and draft cost. I see this is getting dragged back into trade discussion. |

Good post Cam
What many don't realise or choose to ignore is he should have won there B&F 2018 as well but the Lions had plans to trade him prior to the season being over when he wouldn't commit to a long term deal
At the time of there B&F Dayne believed he would be a Lions player for the next 2 seasons. His one fatal error was telling them the truth he intended to relocate to Melbourne again once his current deal run out
The Lions have every right to look to there future as does every club so exploring there options wasn't sinister or anything
When the Lions approached Dayne he agreed to a trade but only to Collingwood as part of a handshake deal he did with Eddie upon his departure
The Beams deal was made in good faith by both the club and Dayne
Yes it hasn't worked but it doesn't mean it was the worst trade in history |

Yes, I think it's very important to distinguish between the awful struggles he is facing, on the one hand, and what a number of us thought about this potential deal in October 2018 when it was first being publicly discussed.

It does bemuse me a bit when posters defend their misjudgement on the Beams trade by saying “ hindsight is a wonderful thing “ or “ the window was open, so we had to do it “
On the other hand, you could also simply say that those who were against the trade in the first place, just happened to get it right.
Having said that, I really hope Beams can find his happy place.
He’s a Collingwood premiership player and should always be remembered fondly for that achievement alone. |

Just another example of Buckley going for a quick fix that once again didn't work out. Making the GF in 2018 was the worst thing as it made them think they were a lot closer to a premiership than they really are.
But it probably isn't as big a **** up as the Daniel Wells recruitment
As for the accident, knowing the location very, very well, its very easy to understand why there are theories about the cause... |

How do you know it was Buckley's decision? He normally lets the recruiters do what they want. |

Sorry, but Points are the draft’s currency now and all an FS gets you is a points discount. The picks we got back allowed us to push up the draft high enough to get our two priority picks at the discounted selections we expected to need.
Here's how we should judge what is a considered decision. A decision is considered when everyone in the football department and admin is happy to take ownership for that decision.
When part of a committee, unanimity in decision-making is not that common. In the end, not everyone will agree and you tend to be guided by the experts or what you think, on balance, is the right call. That’s what considered means. |

Nothing to do with Buckley. He also didn't want Wells, and was also against Mayne (but admitted he was wrong on him). |

The club did not need to do the trade to get those discounted players. It could have done many other things and still ended up with those players. They are separate. People try to combine this with the trade to make the trade look better. They are unrelated.

With some of our recent trades, they unanimously blamed everyone else. No one took ownership of the decision, and people were actively scapegoating others.
I don't know why supporters feel the need to believe that mistakes just happen out of the vacuum with nobody making them. If you drop that belief, it won't mean the whole footy department gets sacked.
But again, this is draft/trade talk (which has already been done to death). This is not a draft/trade thread. If everyone wants to talk trades again, should we just dig out the old draft/trade thread?? |
