6 eye surgeries, sheesh. I’m one week into recovery from cataract surgery and it sucks. Six surgeries for a pro athlete must be very hard to deal with. _________________ "The night is a very dark time for me" Chaz Michael Michaels |

Attended an event at the Heathcote Winery last Sunday and met up with Tony (Bluey) Southcombe who I know from the days he used to be a butcher and later ran the Bridge hotel in Bendigo. Funny enough I asked him about playing with glasses and he said he initially tried contact lenses but they kept on falling out during the game so he chose to wear glasses instead.
As an aside Tony was a brother in law to a player who was rated as the best player not to play at VFL level, Ron Best. He initially played for Heidelberg in Melbourne which was in Collingwood’s zone but refused many invitations to train with them. He played in a few premiership’s with Northern United who played in the Bendigo league those days and was coached by Tony Southcombe. In one GF, Best kicked 12 goals. He was a true legend. _________________ Don't confuse your current path with your final destination. If he feels more confident attacking the ball and it improves his vision, then the club can only be better for it.
Last bloke I remember who wore them regularly was Geoff Blethyn. Have I missed anyone ? |
Tony Southcombe from Carlton. Anyone else? |
Fitzroy's Bob Beecroft also wore them in an Escort Cup game, but not during VFL matches apparently.

It will be interesting what sort of glasses he will wear.
Flat ones or curved or some other shape.
It must hinder him in some way.
Otherwise more than a handful of players have worn them in the last half of a century whilst playing footy |

It appeared to me that there was an element of protection, rather than just vision correction that could be covered by contacts. |

Mate of mine came up with a St Kilda player called Chris Stone ( 20 odd games ) who wore them in 1979. Apparently he was remembered more for marrying the Prime Minister of Belgium than he was for wearing the goggles. |

Ive always rated Cox highly, outstanding team player. So glad to see that he can wear glasses. Since that first eye poke he has suffered - and so have we. Now that he is staying for 2022 and has decent eye wear, I expect him to get back to his sharpshooting best. _________________ ___________________
