The 2021 Great Big Consolidated Trade & Draft thread

To finish 2nd last this season, and now with a new coach and coaching panel, we have to trade out players to get ourselves back up the order.

Whilst we have Nick Daicos coming on board as the F/S (and supposedly No1 pick in the draft based on talent) our 1st pick at the moment is 34.

Not sure how good the draft talent is this year, given COVID impact for the past two seasons, but we need to improve our list immeasurably with KP talent.

My feeling is that because of two seasons with COVID there will inevitably be a lot of younger players that have gone under the radar with no lower level football competitions last year and for parts of this year. This is when scouts and footy intel come in handy. A potential top ten pick might be out there somewhere not able to play regular footy.

Here’s my wish list and it comes with obvious restraints as to who I would like to us target as a KPF during this off season. Callum Coleman - Jones.
This guy ticks all the following boxes. Out of contract, versatile, 22 years old, 100 kilos, 200cm, performs well when selected but gets little opportunity because of quality in front of him. Has definite upside and upside comes at a cost but the cost is manageable.
I’m a lot more comfortable giving up a bit more for Coleman - Jones than I am giving up less for Weideman.
Most on here have Cox and Lynch moving on, so Coleman - Jones automatically fits both an option B ruck need and a genuine key forward threat. He’s probably worth our future second rounder ( give or take )
His contract would be reasonable but I’m imagining less than Cox for a start.
Any potential interest probably depends on two factors. Firstly, what McRae thinks of him and secondly, whether Marbir Chol stays or goes.
So let’s at least spend our energy on a player who contributes in two areas of the ground, especially if we’re planning to move Cox and / or Lynch on.

Dylan Stephens is a bit like Nathan Freeman (injury aside) in the sense that he was a top 10 pick and didn't get any game time in first two seasons hence dropped in value when off loaded to St Kilda. Eventually went for late second round pick we then used in James Aish trade. Swans are apparently shopping Stephens around knowing they cannot keep him under their salary cap and also sign Luke Parker, Jordan Dawson etc...

It's these type of scenarios that graham Wright has excelled at before. Getting a former top 5 pick in Stephens and Lipinski at "unders" along with Nick Daicos and Youseph Dib would be a phenomenal outcome and strengthen our midfield running game infinitely. Anything on top of this would be gravy.

^ Id love Coleman - Jones I really would. But Ive heard he is close to a deal and Richmond are letting a few go like Naish to ensure they can keep him.

From another source I heard M lynch wants to stay - it will depend on McRaes view.

Agree that Thomas and WHE all of a sudden look like they can be carried to support the kids. A known qty is better than unknown and with a new coach perhaps clarity of role could squeeze some better form out of them ( Although Thomas was much better 2nd half year when the ball was coming in quicker)

Lynch from Adelaide would seem to fill the KPF role albeit it in the short term.
He has experience, size and is a delisted free agent.
I would seriously consider someone like him as a short term option until the salary cap frees up to allow us to pursue a longer term option.

Lynch on $250,000 a year combining both on field and coaching duties would be a bargain. Reckon he has 30-40 games in him and could be a bridge whilst Henry, Johnson, McCreery and Ginnivan emerge physically.

$250,000 a year for a delisted Lynch? Do you anticipate him placing himself in a bidding war between us and another bottom four side for his services?
He would be inclined, I'd imagine, to be instructed by his agent to take whatever offer comes along?
$100-150K would be my maximum budget - he isn't going to demand that sort of coin outside the AFL. Who has that sort of money these days?!

WE will be a pretty young team, as i have a feeling both Thomas and WHE may well be delisted, they have had enough chances. Cox may retire, who knows ? But, we cant be too young, so we definitely need to recruit a couple of senior experienced players, like that Taliah, perhaps ?

After oscillating a lot on that topic, I think WHE and Thomas have value, provided we improve as a team. I think they're the kind of players that play well in a better team and I do love WHE's slick ball use (which can be seldom when he goes missing). Hence why they were so potent in 2018. WHE is a classic 10-15 possession player. I'd prefer to see him get those touches closer to goal, not in defence.

We need some bigger bodies around for sure. Lipinski would immediately make us a little better IMHO. If we can get a semi-competent KPF into the side who can halve contests and crash packs, then it should make Checkers more effective too. He's been a trooper holding up our forward line by himself. He cops an absolute battering some games and never leaves the field (except one time from memory).

Checkers is a warhorse but he badly needs help.

Neither McMahon nor Begg are anywhere near playing regular senior footy. Unless they suddenly pack on 10kgs of pure muscle in the off season and develop Jack Redpaths hunger for busting contests.

Who knows, maybe ‘Magic’ Johnson will pull an Adrian Macadam and kick 70 goals in his first season to save the day?

I think they'll be back to renegotiate the deal - they'll be wanting us to pay his entire salary and then give them enough additional salary-relief that they can recruit an actual footballer to play in his spot.

I should add that it's much less frustrating paying for him not to touch the ball in a different team's jumper than watching him do that in our colours.

Remember folks, we have a 197 cm key forward yet to be unwrapped, in Begg, as well as a 193 cm one in 'Magic' Johnson.

If they are half as good as they've been hyped, then our key forward stocks might just be fine.

Hoss looked more comfortable on the wing pushing forward, and still has a few years ahead of him to regain his best form.

Thomas will be 30 by the start of next season and seems past his prime. Watching him steal a mark off Ginny to kick a goal, and then hardly acknowledge the kid, wasn’t a great look.

Agree re Johnson but Begg was a steal. I beleive he could have gone very early in this draft. Kane Cornes was annoyed when we took him for that reason.

Thomas I think was good, particularly back half.
I think WHE was up and down. I beleive its how we used him in the team. Looking forward to see what McRae does with him.
